our local news station ran a piece on "playing hooky" from work:

30% of employees call in sick each year when they are not actually sick {did not say if this number includes those who call in because they need to take care of a sick child/spouse/parent.etc}

29% of employers REQUIRE a dr's note
18% have employees call in
14% drive by their house
17% will FIRE those giving a false claim

40% of workers do not get paid sick leave {mostly part-time}

Excuses:
#1) stress
Most Unusual:
-- Dog having a nervous breakdown
-- Toe stuck in a faucet
-- Upset after watching "The Hunger Games"
-- Sobriety tool wouldn't start car
