So - the real question should have been, can a person using a PUBLIC phone booth have the same sense of privacy which they do in their home?
Remember, the only thing between the caller and the public, in general, was a glass door - they were not air tight, nor sound proof doors either.
To me the answer is NO ... after all, very often the OPERATOR could be expected to jump onto the phone to tell you to insert more money or that your time was up - which would have meant that there was intrinsically someone else already privy to the phone calls.
BUT - that being said, while you may not agree with how the law was applied in this case, ... you have to admit that it is a VERY important case for Privacy Rights
