"Thousands of young men came streaming out of Kibera, a shantytown of one million people, waving sticks, smashing shacks, burning tires and hurling stones. Soldiers poured into the streets to meet them. In other areas across the country, gangs went house to house, dragging people of certain tribes out of their homes and clubbing them to death."I swear every time you turn around there is some sort of genecide going on in Africa....Rwanda...Somalia....now Kenya. What the hell?
Then there is the question of why the UN isn't in there holding the elections themselves when they knew that they were going to have major issues.
Why is killing people...heck, neighbors.....maybe even friends & coworkers...just because of what tribe they are the first reaction that they have? Like these single individuals had something to do with it all.
Everytime I hear stuff like this I think back to 6th grade....I volunteered for a pen pal and the one I got was from Kenya...we were writing each other for quite some time when she suddenly stopped. I don't know if she was caught up in the unrest that flaired up in her country at the time, or if she even got my last letter.
I don't remember her name...it has been so long...but I wonder sometimes if she wonders about me too. But then I see stories like this and I wonder if she is still alive and if so, if she is alright.
I have to wonder....I mean the closest we had gotten was the Rodney King verdict affair....hell, it was war in the streets...we even had some threats that there would be unrest even this far north...I mean you saw one guy get pulled out of the cab of his semi and get beaten to within an inch of his life (I believe they broke every bone in his face)...but that is still nothing compared to this`
Could you imagine if this would have happened after the 2000 election? I mean, there were a lot of bitterness surrounding it that still gets expressed today....but what if the Dems had gotten ticked off enough to start pulling people out of their homes who they suspected of being republicans and....what would we do?
This is way worse than anything that happened during the civil rights riots of the 60's....but then who knows what was being reported over seas about it.
Maybe it isn't as bad as the media makes it sound...latching onto a few horrifying reports making the situation seem so much more than it really is.
After all, if it were that bad wouldn't you think that the UN would have jumped in by now??
