STORM WATCH: Tornado
Major tornado killed as few as 21 and as many as 51 reports are saying ... Most of them children from an elementary school
There were 7 kids who were in a storm shelter at the school where the roof collapse on them and a water main broke filling the shelter - they were unable to get out from under the rubble and were drowned along with the teacher.
I did not realize that few homes in the area do NOT have basements - you would think being in Tornado Alley they would - but the soil is either clay (which causes water to collect in the basements) or bedrock (which needs to be dynamited) so there is no real way to put them in.
The best they can do are underground shelter boxes with metal sliding doors - but they cost like $10,000 to go in and aren't very big ... About the size of a small bathroom or jail cell (6 X 10foot)
Add supplies to that so you can wait for rescue if need be and you've got about 6x6 left ... 4 people would fill that up fast.
The storm was an EF4 (more to come on that) which was between 1/2 - 1 mile wide with a debri field of 2 - 2 1/2 miles ... The speeds were clocked at well over 200 mph at one point and stayed on the ground for about 40 minutes ...
The record breaker of 1999 they keep talking about was 1 mile wide, was an EF5' had winds of 300 mph, and stayed on the ground for over an hour! WOW
These two tornadoes took almost the same path - in fact the paths, when payed on top of each other, look like a chromosome ... A tight X that crosses over Moore ...
I was shocked to hear that schools are only required to do tornado drills once a SEMESTER ... That's just twice a year ... In MN our schools have to do them ONCE A MONTH (just like fire drills)
New info just came in that I will post in seperate posting

Spring Time Up North
We got 2.25 inches of rain at the homestead ... And more than that at the in-laws this weekend.
We thought we'd leave early from up there so we would miss the majority of the weather before it crossed into/onto the route we liked to drive ... Thought if we took the way that doesn't skirt the rivers that we'd be safer ... Since storms tend to follow the airflow/heat currents orpine the river ...
But instead we ran into this:
![]() |
| From Cabin photos |
I know - it doesn't look as bad as you think ... WRONG
![]() |
| From Cabin photos |
I thought this was just a photo of some low hangers or a downpour ... But, yes, I think that is an image of where the tornado was actually dipping down!
Luckily, it was behind us and we were headed to other direction ... very lucky by the looks of the pictures on the web and on the news.
This is the second time we have seen a tornado out the back window on the way back from the in-laws since we've been married ... The first time our oldest was young enough to be in a car seat and I had to sit in the back with him to hold his bottle while hubby drove. Luckily this time, we had the two youngest with us and they are both old enough to be able to get to a ditch if need be.
We rN into a couple of down pours bad enough to make it tough to see but at least we didn't have to pull over to the side of the road ... or run into any hail.

Numerology Class
440,000 first time unemployment claims (but that is better than expected) -- skeptics say that the number is low because bad weather kept people from claiming and that the weather did close many state offices in nation so people couldn't claim if they wanted to ... this would 'invalidate' the number.
WH forecasts 95,000 new jobs/month to be created this year (Council of Economic Advisors), but their numbers aren't adding up - where are these jobs? Experts are saying that you have to have at least 100,000 new permanent full-time positions before we make a dent in the unemployment rate and to get the economy growing.
1.6-2.3 million ... number of jobs Biden claims were created with the stim. bill (although the CBO has come out and said the formula used to come up with these numbers is no where near accurate)
4 days - number of days Washington DC has been shut down by snowstorm. But it could be days before residential areas can get dug out.
Snow falls:
- 26.8" East Nantmeal, PA
- 26.0" Westminster, NY
- 17.5" Westfield, NY
- 17.0" Blackwood, NJ
- 14.0" Lucketts, VA
200 - number of people stranded along I-78 because snow plows could not keep up with the snow. Berks county EMS delivered food/water to people to sustain them until midnight, when the highway was finally cleared [ginger: so if the emergency crews could get to them, why couldn't they get these people out of there to some shelter? this is the same damn shit that goes on during floods & other disasters]
Record Snow fall for seasons (and its not over yet):
- 09-10__Prev.
- 71.6____65.5___Philadelphia, PA
- 79.9____62.6___Baltimore, MD
- 55.9____54.4___Washington DC
- 66.7____55.9___Wilmington, DE
11" - the total snow fall we got in my city even though the "official" total was only 5" (so bad that the bottom 3 steps to our front door could not be seen)

Weather: impending Blizzard
lots of wind is NOT a blizzard no matter how high you have to turn up the furnace ...
yet somehow the weather service in our area is predicting "4-7inches of snow" for my area and then tomorrow the wind is supposed to pick up the bit we got and throw it around ....
I will believe it when I see it ....
these storms are nothing compared to what it was like as a child ... {pending old age moment ahead} .... I remember snow banks as tall as I was as a kid -- granted I was about 4ft tall when I walked the 6blocks to school, which really was mostly uphill both ways - don't ask how, you have to know the streets of Prospect Park before they straightened them out because people forgot to learn to actually drive .... I remember snows so deep that you could make a good sized snowman before Christmas time ....
I remember days when it was so cold that no matter how bundled up we were we still got cold - and mom really bundled us up ... you know Ralphie's little brother in "A Christmas Story"? Andy? okay maybe not that bad - but you had to make sure you went to the bathroom first and you had to get ready at least 15 minutes before it was time to leave for the bus stop, which ranged from 1 - 3 blocks away depending on what year it was and how badly mom argued with the school about it. Not once while I was in school did the bus pick us up in front of the house even though we were on the main road & on the corner .... however, two years after I graduated, they changed things and suddenly there was a bus stop on the corner - go figure.
So my kids are watching the news in hopes that they will close things down over the impending "storm" -- I've explained to them that it ain't going to happen, they will have school...they will have to put on all their gear and go out in the snow ... trudge down to the end of the drive (oh so far!) and step onto the bus.
My predictions:
we will end up with maybe 2inches by morning ... perhaps 3inches by the end of the day .... yes the winds will pick up - but it isn't going to effect the visibility hardly at all. will let you know tomorrow -- with photos even! now that the surveillance cams are working again.

Nature's Follow Up joke

I like this veiw better because it shows the snow in comparison to the rings surrounding the seedlings - or where there is supposed to be seedlings - each level of the ring is about 3 inches high and each ring has 5 levels - so they are about 15 inches tall ... but don't quote me on that, I would have to measure them.
Hubby made them himself out of his own inspiration ... they are topped with hardware cloth to keep the deer from reaching in and nipping off the tender tops and they are anchored with fencing stakes ... this summer I will get a better photo --- maybe even make a video of hubby putting a new one together for my friends over at Green-House.tv ... which I actually became introduced to thru their website/podcast gardenfork.tv
check them out.

More Proof of Global Warming ...
"The flurries tied a record for Houston's earliest snowfall ever and warmed the hearts of winter weather lovers who have pined for snow since it last made an appearance on Christmas Eve 2004.Yep ... you've read that right ... it is snowing in the Deep South!! Geez its too bad that the planet is warming up to the point of there not being snow -- oh wait -- sorry.
...
Since 1895, records indicate, snow has fallen this early just once — on Dec. 10, 1944."
When are these people going to wise up and just admit that the Earth is going thru a natural cycle or that we really don't know much about the natural cycle of things and that Global Warming is a giant myth at this point and there is nothing we can do if this is all just a natural part of things.
I think the thing that gets me is that the Global Warming nuts are starting to change their explinations .... I've even read one say that Global cooling is a result of Global Warming.

So today when we woke up we had THIS:

Nation of Wimps?
This morning I heard on the ABC affiliate radio station the national news and the anchor said "If its warm put it on, most of the country in bitter cold" .... oh I thought, most of the Nation must be like -40*F ... after all that is 'bitterly cold' in my mind - okay just to be nice to the wimpy anchor, lets say 0*F is 'bitter'ly cold...
So I pulled up the temp map of the 'main land' (after all, while Alaska is part of the nation ... it is kind of in a special circumstance there) .... up comes the map. Coldest temp they have on there?
9 degrees F .... in Northern Minnesota .... up by International Falls - the 'Icebox of the Nation' - yeah .... well they are supposed to be cold .... news is when it gets warm up there in the wintertime.
oh ... they must be talking winds as a factor .... so I pulled up the wind map. It tells me the direction and the speed of the wind (color coated)....
hmmm .... well other than North Dakota .... the entire nation is a shade of green .... green goes from 0 - 5 mph .... which unless its below 0*F doesn't do much to the wind chill. Hmmm
so wind chill can't be it -- after all, with the new formula they are using the windchills these days are NOT as cold as they were just 20 yrs ago.
so where the heck is this 'bitter' cold they are speaking of??
What would we do if there was a sudden blizzard like they used to have in the 1800's? blizzards that buried the houses for days on end - ones where you would have to dig a tunnel to get to your garage ... well in that time, the barn to do your chores?
I've thought about this in the summer before ... when people start whining as they are sitting in their nice wood based homes with their central air about how hot it is and how 'global warming' is showing its colors ... and while I'm roasting in my concrete/brick oven, with the little window units that can barely keep up with it all ...
HOW SPOILED ARE WE??
Then I think about the people who have learned to work the system ... in our state, from Oct 1st - May 1st, they can not BY LAW shut of utilities to houses/apartments/buildings who do not pay their bills on time ... because, Lord Forbid, they might not know what to do...
Now we did have a case where some squatters had taken over a home this year ... well they may not be squatters, I think they started as tenants but they didn't pay the gas/electric bill so the landlord tried to evict them and they wouldn't go (lets not go here right now ... I've got some pretty strong feelings on this one too) ...
The power/gas company came after the owner of the house so he paid the bill and ordered the power/gas shut off .... this was well before Oct. ... well the family still would not vacate ... instead they brought in a gas generator and hooked it up to the house and put the unit in the house so that the landlord would not see it and turn it off.
Needless to say ... gas engine, enclosed area, throw people into that mix ... well you can kind of get the picture here -- the family died from CO2 ... I don't remember if it was the whole family, it may have been the majority of them ...
Surviving members are going to sue the home owner because they were stupid enough to put the generator in the house -- never mind the fact that they were there illegally .... I'm close to a tangent here ...
So, did they need 'heat'? um no, it was actually nice outside ... not too cold, not too warm.
Did they need the generator for lights? well they probably could have gotten away with flashlights & battery operated lanterns.
maybe they needed the generator to work the pump/well/septic like we do were we are? no, they were inner city ... its pretty much turn it on and go, flush and say goodbye.
um...cooking? well they could have needed the generator for that ... but they would have done better with a hibachi grill with charcoal to cook on ... heat water ... etc. so that couldn't be it.
Now when we lose power out here we have to run a generator because without electricity ... we have no water ... we have no way to rid the waste ... so its a sanitation concern more than anything else. At least once a year it seems to hit home how fragile this system is.
Our heat is from a boiler system ... but the thermostats run off electricity - if there is an interruption, the furnace will not turn on when its supposed to ... but it should be okay for a while since internal pressure would keep thing circulating for a while ... and hubby is pretty sur ehe can 'by pass' if needed.
But have homes in the US become so dependant on 'climate controlled' enviroments that we could not survive a simple 2 degree change in the average temperature? After all they say that 3-4 degrees in either direction and we either fry or freeze, globally (tree huggers).
Now people have survived the Ice Ages ... we have made civilizations in the deserts where you would think nothing could live ... we have gone to the moon & back ... we have transversed the tips of our world -- all to do what?
whine because its in the TEENS this morning?
Hmmm ... I feel a series of posts about past events that I don't think we could survive coming on. it should be nice filler until the next exchange starts again.
Well ... maybe I will stick to photos of things we would cry in the corner over.
lets start with this?
********************************
This is Watkins, MN in 1940 during the famous "Armestice Day blizzard" which blew up out of now where ...this person is digging out in front of his store so he can OPEN FOR BUSINESS.
They had over 4 foot of snow ... and they dug their way out.
most houses still have a log-fireplace or a coal furnace ... neither dependant on a central hub to keep things going.
Could we survive a simular storm today?
I'm not so sure ... I think people would be either huddling up screaming for the government to do something ... or they would all decend on a central location and complain that it was too crowded and that the government needed to do something.
Armistice Day 1940 ... a lot worse than it is this morning!

SNOW!!!
Yes it is early this year, or least I don't remember getting any flakes before Halloween before. I remember that when we had the big Halloween snow of 1991 it was a really big deal (it was the same storm as the Perfect Storm of movie fame).
But we got snow - husband had turned on the heat Saturday night under the guise of not wanting the kids to get cold ... they hadn't complained about it yet - well not much anyways.
But we got snow. We really aren't ready for snow yet. We were going to get some hay to put on the septic tanks to keep them from forming a layer of ice on them, and popping the lids (YUCK!) ... we have leaves all over the place again from the winds, they will need to get raked up so we don't get lawn-rot come Spring - a mold condition that can kill grass faster than dog urine and then the only thing that will grow there will be Burrdock.
but SNOW .... I love snow. I have located my snow shoes .... I look forward to taking the little one out to her bus this winter, that is once there is enough snow on the driveway for me to put on the snowshoes and plot down there and then around the property before the older ones leave ...
When I got my snowshoes I swore I was going to use them everyday that I could, as long as windchill was above 0*F (its the rule of thumb in the house) ... but then visiting relatives kind of thru the whole idea out the window ... and once off I get off the treadmill its really hard to get me back on.

waiting waiting waiting
I have put in a request for an Invite to Ravelry.
it was the hottest thing a while back and they had a waiting list of like 3 months when I first heard about it ... I figured it was going to eventually fade - that it was the latest fad on the internet and that it wasn't going to last long...
Boy was I wrong.
Well I guess there are conversations going on over there for the sock-swap group as well ... so I finally broke down ... like I need yet another distraction (only reason I'm blogging this morning instead of grabbing my socks is because my eyes are so sore from last nights storms - they lasted until 2 am and the thunder shook the concrete/brick house).
well ... it said there was only a 2 day wait .... I'm on day 3.
waiting .... waiting ..... waiting. sigh. this is boring. off to look at more photos of Snape.

Hurricane: Fey
NRL Monterey Satellite Photos Okay so this is a naval photo I found of the current news disappointment. As you can see Fey is actually part of a larger cloud band ... now the weather service - who has been getting crap for over forcasting the number of major hurricanes for the past few years - is forecasting that Tropical Storm Fey still has a chance to turn into a cat 1 Hurricane ... they hope, they hope ... since they hope beyond hope that it crosses back over land within the next 2 days/48 hours.
Of course as you can see from the bands - chances are probably greater that the storm will follow the other clouds and go out to sea.
The only thing that the hurricane center has going for it is the competing high pressure areas that are keeping Fey where she is instead of letting her be out over open water by now.

Was going to let this pass
But I ran into this chart of probable wind speeds:
This chart was posted 18 Aug at 1500 UTC (figure you own times) ... it clearly shows that it is unlikely that Fay will become a hurricane for any extended period of time -- it might reach winds of hurricane speed for a couple of hours but nothing that should actually call it an actual hurricane.Although I will give them credit in that, it won't be the wind that's the issue with this storm -- it will be the rain that will come with it. The storm is likely to hit on the gulf side of the state where they are not used to getting many storms.
My brother lived there for 15yrs and never got hit with anything but the thinner rain bands - and since FL is right at sea level or so they can't take much rain before they begin to flood out.
but still - they have got to start getting their act together or else people are going to start ignoring them. Or maybe they will just 'reconfigure' what hurricane levels are, the way they did the F scale for tornados, so that they can claim that the storms are worse than they are ... the F scale has slowed down the speeds needed for each level -- which means we are now more likely to see an 'F5' tornado than before so they can claim that its because of global warming, not because of any real change:

Hot Day Coming
The Newfoundland is already barking to get into the house so she can curl inside her 'cave' (i.e. cage/kennel) in the basement where it is cool.
I mean normally she will bark if I put her out and forget to feed her - in fact she's insistant - or she has dumped her water - although that's usually for attention. However today it has been bark, bark, bark, bark.
Always at the doors and never at the street, so its not the joggers or bikers ... and we don't have motorcycles down the lane either.
She just wants IN ... she does have her 'bomb shelter' that she can go into, but somehow it has lost its appeal without the door to rip off anymore. It will be interesting to see what she will do once it is fixed.
but ....
its going to be a hot day.
hubby wanted to put in the window unit air conditioners and I talked him out of it. They have such big gaps that I have to go around and tape up around them all and that is such a pain to try to find the light holes.
but the hottest room this year will be the boys' room.
their window shade finally gave way this winter and they don't make this kind anymore. I know you are thinking 'why not just get a new one?' Well let me explain....
we live in a concrete house. not just a brick house ... or one that uses cinder blocks ... a SOLID concrete house. And as it turned out when we got the rooms painted before moving in, we learned that they used metal in the walls of the windows.
They are like fake/mock/faux bay windows that are slanted ... but they are nice and deep so that I can get a large (not huge) floor pot on each one, and wide enough so that I can get at least 4 across in each one. I really like them! Think bookshelf deep. The old house had window sills so small that you couldn't even put a candle holder on one of them.
Well the metal part lends itself to a lot of issues - one of which is peeling paint since its hard to get an interior paint that will adhere properly with weather changes. The other is drilling to put in hardware -- ahh there's the rub.
We need a drill that can go thru the top layer of concrete without breaking it, thru the metal without dulling to go into the concrete on the other side without knocking the wall apart.
I used to wonder why my MIL didn't have a lot of things on her walls - now I know why. Of course I was never a big wall decorator myself - I change my mind too much - so until we moved here I actually had very little by way of wall decoration ... a photo of each kid was about it, maybe a couple of shelves....that's it.
My mother on the other hand!
Ooops --- tangent again .... I was talking about that window shade and the heat.
So as you can see putting up a new shade is not as easy as one might think.
oh well - it has to get done. I will have to figure out something -- maybe make a hanging shade from hooks ... you know some of those Command ones that stick to just about anything. Time to get the thinking cap on again.
I think I will probably regret talking hubby out of putting in window units by this afternoon -- but we will see.

FOLLOW UP: China's Earthquake Lake
I should have realized that the media was going to give half the information .... I should have checked National Geographic online first.
They had these before/after photos (of course now I cant find it on there, but I did find new secondary source):
I had hoped to only upload just the first two, since they show what happened better.
So .... it is not really a 'lake' that was made .... it is a swelling of the river -- this is a tad different.
Yes they need to clear the BLOCKAGE that is swelling the river .... which they accomplished on Tuesday according to Nat.Geo.news .... I was going to upload the video, but wasn't sure if that was allowed or not --- so its better for you to jump to their site to watch it.

Oh Please

Remember the year that we went thru the entire alphabet??
Well what they didn't tell you is that until the 1990's the way they named storms was totally different.
First they only named the hurricanes that they knew made it to land ... only the hurricanes (at first they are just numbered) .... during ww2 they began to actually track how many tropical storms/hurricanes occured - they had to .... but still storms didn't get named half as much as they do now .... it seemed like it was in the 1980's (maybe it was sooner, I just didn't notice) that they began to name the tropical storms if they even approached hurricane 1 strength for any amount of time .... now a days they name them as soon as they reach the very bottom level of the tropical storm stage --
So of course it seems like we are having way more storms than 'normal'. But then wht is normal?? Records for the US only go back to 1900 or so .... before that the records come from sea captains who, lets face it, tried their best to avoid the areas that would produce storms in the Atlantic ocean.
This also means ... that there are no records of storms before the first land fall of Europeans in America .... not sure if Spain kept records, or the French .... but the Anglo-Saxons pretty much stuck to the upper part of the continent where they get very, very few hurricaines.
I'm sorry --- I have a really tough time believing that we are having an 'above' average hurricane season. As far as we know this is all perfectly normal, and what we have enjoyed for the last 200 yrs has been a lower than 'normal' cycle.
*******************
Okay so remember the big earthquake that they had in China .... oh the tragedy. I could not believe that they began to give up finding survivors as quickly as they did -- did they learn nothing from the big quake in Mexico where they were still finding survivors 2 weeks afterwards?
Any ways ..... one of the side effects of the quake is the formation of a lake. Yes we have actual evidence that this is one way that the Earth makes her lakes ... not left overs from glacial meltoff, not sunk basins that fill after a giant flood, not in any way that was the assumption .... somehow this lake was formed!
So what is the Chinese government going to do? Blow it up. Destroy it.
Now I can understand the concern -- they are worried that it will eventually give way on one side and cause a flood, so by releasing the water in a controlled way they will prevent futher tragedy.
But it is a natural occuring water source!!! Where are the enviromentalists over there bitching and complaining about this??? Where are the protests about the ridding of a fresh water supply (although I don't know how 'fresh' that water is)?
It just shocks me how 'free' their government seems to be, compared to ours. Do you realize how much red tape our government would have to go thru? Where is their enviromental impact report?
***************
kirk cameron was on The View today (notice I didn't capitalize his name, he doesn't deserve that much of my respect) .... it slayed me to listen to this bigotted ass talk.
What kirk cameron bigotted? YES. He is on TBN (televised bigotted network, in my opinion) and on his show they went undercover to a Pagan (druid to be specific) festival. Okay - now if they had gone to actually learn something it would have been totally different ... but his entire purpose for going was to secretly record the ceremony and then put these people down.
He didn't bother to 'learn' anything .... he didn't ask any 'real' questions ... he tried to gather info to say these people were devil-worshippers, or that they were against everything that his religion stood for.
Here is a link to deo shadow's post that has the clip of kirk's show (even though it says it will sound like chipmunks, I found it worked just find) or you can download it from deo shadow's site as well.
Hey, kirk, what would Jesus do? Did you EVER hear Jesus put down someone for their religion? I don't think so. I don't remember ever reading it.
I wrote to TBN to ask them to make some sort of comment (okay I was hoping for some sort of statement that said kirk was wrong to infiltrate the group just to make fun of them) and what I got back was as statement that said that unless I could find passages in the Bible that supported my premise that what he did (making fun of another religion) was not something I felt Jesus would sanction then they didn't want to hear it.
They saw absolutely NOTHING wrong with putting a group of people down who did nothing wrong -- nothing more than practice a PEACEFUL ceremony.
Anyways -- so this jerk got all this press over this peice of shit bit so I was shocked, amazed, awestruck that this never ONCE came up in the interview with the ladies -- not once did they ask about his opinions of other religions (yes he even feels that jews will be burning, you've got to listen to some of the other crap he has put out there, its not on this particular clip).
Nope ... instead they let him praddle on and on about how hollywood discriminates against Christians.
No kirk ... it was just you ... you who felt that it was your job in this world to tell everyone who doesn't believe what you do that they are going to Hell .... kirk .... you are an ass.
When did God make you holder of the keys for the Pearly Gates???
such an ass. Buy his book --- AnD BURN IT!!! Preferably in some cauldron or bonfire!! Post it on YOUTUBE --- PLEASE!!!

38*F? It’s the end of MAY‼
What the heck??‼!
Okay so this weekend we went to the cabin … it will be a rare treat this year with the gas prices the way they are. Granted its only about 1 ½ hrs. from the house if hubby books it, 2 hrs. if he decides to drive 'nicely', 2 ½ hrs. if he wants to make sure their aren't any new fingernail marks scraped into the back seat (I have to sit in back otherwise I tend to grab the driver). But it's the gas prices (and to some extent scouts) that will keep us from going up very often this year. ~but I digress, imagine that~
So we went to the cabin – it's the perfect place to give the dog a very thorough, complete brushing. We have a fire pit that the hair can be put into and used as kindling, and if the hair gets all over no biggie, the wind will blow it to where the birds will grab it for nesting. Well the wind – that was an understatement.
We are sitting out there in the sun – which suddenly blinked out – and the wind changed. It started to come in very cold, wintery puffs – anyone from the Midwest will tell you 'this is not a good sign' – well its been a whacky spring so we didn't think too much of it … we knew something was in the air, but c'mon its May! We don't need to worry until it gets to +80∘F and the humidity is around 65 – 80%...just that tropical stuff.
This was actually shaping up to be a nice comfy day…in fact the reason I went out was to disturb hubby who was enjoying his book way too much (I got bored with my crocheting and the movies the kids wanted to watch) … and I intended to brush the dog. ~look, I'm digressing again~
Well we got a great laugh when the kids discovered that you can't play Frisbee around the dog – apparently she sees it as some sort of menace, because she was going to try her best to teach it a lesson. Well we had to go in to get things going for supper – grandma had jumped on it (I lost total track of time playing with the dog/kids/hubby) and supper was actually finished {I never felt so helpless and low} but we turned on the news to catch the weather and saw this: I thought i had a better photo but it didn't photograph well

So you might be wondering 'where exactly is your cabin' … well, according to this radar it was somewhere under that red/purple/black. You know that was the first time we have ever seen black & white in the color radar…it was quite eerie. Why? Because we got what seemed like lots of rain but there was no wind. I tried to get a photo of the weather but digital cameras change the photos so much, trying to give you the best photo that they wash out things like different colored clouds, swirling wisps, etc. although we did not see any swirling.
But then, we couldn't see the other side of the lake either. The lake is 1 mile wide … and we couldn't see it because of the misty, drippy rain – it wasn't a hard rain although you could hear the drops hit the windows & roof. Thunder rolled from everywhere and came before the lightening ever showed up which is really strange (it did it the night before too, arrived 1 ½ hr before the actual lightening)…you sit and wonder 'is it thunder or just a plane?'…'did someone just show up or is it weather?' … 'bear or Thor?' (oops that's a different post). It was so strange sitting there waiting for the wind. Then to top it off the power the cabin was cut in half … it didn't go out, it was a brown out … just kind of dimmed and I made the mistake of checking the multiple light switch to see if I could get the hall light to go on. Wrong switch. I flipped the one for the kitchen where we were getting ready to eat, not enough power to turn them back on. Grandfolks put in portable phone about 2 yrs ago so they could talk outside while working if needed…and learned portable phones don't work with half power. Okay so use a cell you say – great idea, if hubby had service and son didn't have roaming. Well there really wasn't a choice – okay there was but grandpa wasn't going to pay roaming (skinflint) – so we bit the bullet and called…automated service (in the country??? You can't escape it).
The birds were singing thru out the whole thing…and we watched as blue sky broke over the lake, and thunder rattled the windows. It was strange, sun on one side of the cabin…thunder on the other.
Then the fog – yes fog during the day, sun still in the sky. It was like a really bad Sherlock movie, but it really did just roll across the lake. You could see it creep and soon you couldn't even see the dock! By morning it was gone.
Figured the weather would straighten out here at home … silly me! We usually are putting out the seedlings when we get back Memorial weekend … we went to the store and came out to puffy bottom clouds, deep and dark, had it been January I would have expected a large snowstorm. This morning, while sunny, really isn't that much better.
