History Channel: FMJ

episode 4
Red vs Black

A fight breaks out in the red house after a few hours of celebrating the days win - Josh (winner of joist) vs David

Only 6 horses are used for the actual jousts even though there are several more for practice - these 6 have more experience
Gulliver
Jefferson
Crispin
Superman
Protorium

Riding practice, with/without lances, no armor

One of the riders considers leaving - one of the best riders according to the head trainer

Announcement of $25,000 for the seconds who do not get to try for main prize

Red vs black
James vs Matt

James rides Superman
Matt rides Crispin

Matt is a philosophy student
James is a professional show jumper

James falls off horse during practice but he doesn't get up right away - once unmasked his face is bloody and the helmet is jammed in place!

James goes to the hospital, to get staples where the helmet cut his scalp (but only 3 staples) and a concussion - no riding for 7 days by drs orders
Another member will have to take his place - John on Preatorium, but he will get no practice rides on the horse

Interesting thing is Matt trained John to theatrically joust!

red vs black
John vs Matt
Pass 1: 1 1/4" lance
0-5 black breaks lance
Pass 2:
1-10 red hit, black breaks lance
Pass 3:
1-10 both miss
Pass 4:
1-15 black breaks lance
Pass 5: 1 1/2" lance
1- 20 black breaks lance
Pass 6:
-4 - 21 red loses 5 pts for not controlling horse, black pt for touch
Pass 7: horse swap Jefferson in
-4 - 21 both miss (red breaks lance but no pts because it missed the guard)
Pass 8:
-4 - 21 both miss

There was no way red team could have won after losing the 5 PTA for loss of control - the most they could have gotten was 16 pts total and even then that would have meant both pass 7&8 needed to be unseatings ...

Even if the black team had lost 5 pts in the same manner in which red team did, they still would have had a tie if red had gotten the 2 unseatings
(-4+20=16 vs 21-5=16)

I just don't see why they did pass 8 when there was NO WAY for red team to recover then because the most they could have gotten was a final score of 6 pts - I would have thought it better not to risk injury to man nor beast, but that's just me I guess
•••••••
I have to say at first I wondered if it was fair to have the theatrical jousters in the competition but they seem to almost be at a disadvantage as they have to unlearn everything they had been taught ... At least that's the way it looks

episode 2
"Unhorsed"
the jousters practice with moving targets - of sorts.

They have a spinning target to hit as well as a jousting version of the tackle dummy that falls down when hit proper.

Lances weight about 10# over the 9 ft from pummel to tip

They don't say if the teams get to see each other practice (although probably not since later they talk about "spies" at practices)- but they live in separate quarters in the same house

This allowed red team to go into black teams area and challenge one of the players ... That doesn't seem right though

There is a closer look at how the armor and lance work together

Black vs red
Jack vs Jake

Jack rides Gulliver
Jake rides Jefferson

Jack is a theatrical jousters (13 years, 5-6 shows a week)
Married, 2 children
jack got hit in the head with a lance at the end of practice - this same hit killed a king ... But Jack did break a few teeth
(cracked molar and shards were spit out)

Jake is a horse trainer (and a bit of a clown)

Jake has a really hard time controlling the lance and the horse at the same time
Jake kept asking "what happened" so I have to wonder if he was riding with his eyes open - although it was the first time he rode with the helmet and it's limited vision
The jousters spend some one-on-one time with their horses

Rider________Jack_______Jake
Horse______Gulliver_____Jefferson

Black vs red
pass 1: 1 1/4" lance
0-10 black gets unseated
Pass2:
0-10 both miss
Pass3:
0-10 both miss
Pass4:
1-10 Jack hits but throws himself off the horse
Pass5: 1 1/2" lance
1-10 both miss
Pass6:
1-11 red hit (although jack broke his lance it was off target so no points)
Pass7:
1-11 both miss
Pass8:
1-11 both miss (although jake hits but not on target and loses control of his lance)

Jack now is a "second" but Jake wins

5. Jefferson
6. Praetorian

First the contestants are dressed on their armor and then get chest shots with a battering ram! I suppose it also helps them learn how to fall

With warnings to keep their mouths closed and not to let their tongues go between their teeth or they might bite it off, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of instruction on how to actually fall so to minimize injury (maybe that's hard to do in 80# of steel)

The other team got to get on the horses and ride - while the coaches whack them in the chest with baseball bats - metal ones - but they tried their best to keep the shots on the grand guards

First joist:
Black vs red team
Josh vs Mike

Josh rides Navarro
Mike rides Crispin

In practice, Josh unseated his trainer and caused a bit of discomfort

In practice, Mike was unseated by the smallest dude on his team (James); he also took a shot in his "special place" but shook it off

Josh has a 3yr old daughter
Mike refers to having a "girl" ... But don't know if it's a daughter - he also seems to be a former marine

STATS:
Rider_______Josh______Mike
Horse______Navarro____Crispin
Combined
Weight_____2,065#_____2,015#
Skill____theater jouster__Horse Stuntman
1 1/4" thick lance

2-3, both strike
Pass 6:
7-4, josh broke lance
Pass 7:
7-4 both miss
Pass 8:
8-5 both strike

Although mike lost, he becomes a "second" and can be put back in the game if one of his team mates can not compete in their joust

Reality Show: Full Metal Jousting

Holy crap - how did I miss the first 5 episodes of this show?

It is On Demand so check it out

This isn't your great ancestors jousting - well kind of - they are wearing stell instead of armor made the old way ...

There is a $100,000 prize - but some of what these guys are put through you have to wonder if it's worth it ...

There are no women allowed - or at least not shown - in the competition just as it was in the old days

These guys are taking full shots! Full unseatings ... Some even take hits that could leave them scarred or crippled for life

This isn't the "pretend" overly controlled jousting matches you see in Vegas or at your local renaissance festival - these guys are out for blood ... The Unseating is worth the most points and can actually cause the most damage ...

Well you try to fall off a horse that's about 6ft high at a run while wearing a steel suit!

The equipment they use is different than those you will find at the fantasy sports as well, really it has to be

The shoulder shields (gridded grand guard) have a grid on them for scoring purposes and that area is about the size of a license plate according to the host

The lances are 11 ft long sticks of solid wood, but I see some metal on there as well for the pummel unless that's just painted that way

The suits weigh 80 lbs (and don't cover everything that the guys wish they would ... See episode 6)14 ga. Stainless steel

The horses are not those sphelt lean things you see on tv - these horses are built Jousting Tough - well they would have to be in order to carry the weight of a man and his armor ... This also means the guys have an extra wide seat

The horses run on a sandy field, and that's what the jousters land on - if you ever fell off a swing set or climber as a kid you know that sand feels like concrete when you fall uncontrolled

Scoring:
01 pt strike on grand guard
05 pt strike and break your lance
10 pt unhorsing (although the 1st episode says it has to hit the grand guard first)

So keep an eye out for updates

They will be labelled History Channel FMJ then the episode guide with in (just like the NatGeo DP)
