"Since 1927, TIME Magazine has chosen a man, woman, or idea that 'for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year.'"This is a follow-up directed to a comment I received on an earlier post in which I had mentioned that I felt that someday history would look back on GW as one of the great American Presidents(for they who sent it - I didn't publish it because it didn't further any conversation, 'cold day in hell' arguments don't really add anything).
Now GW is the only the second person that has been named 'Man of the Year' three times (once shared with his father) - the other was FDR, known to be a great president .... now we all know that Time doesn't care about whether someone is good or bad or saintly or evil .... their criteria is simply news-worthiness -- although 2006 someone must have dropped the ball (it was the year they published it will a mirror on the cover -- what a peice of tripe).
_actually I am shocked to see that Albert Einstien got 'Person of the Century' ... after all there was Thomas Edison, Tesla, the inventor of Penicillan, or even Susan B. Anthony who did more for our everyday life than he did_
Back on track.
Lets remember that historians, though it seems a tad less these days, try to color everyone in a better light than they were. I've even seen it said that even with all the horrid things that Hitler was responsible for, he did pull the country out of a depression in record time.
Let's remember that FDR .... known now as a great president ... did some pretty bad stuff in his time too - including taking away veterans' pentions from vets & widows during the depression! He also cut funding for EDUCATION to a tune that would have protestors these days calling for his impeachment. He raised the deficit by 40% during his term. And let's not forget how the NRA was ruled as to give him too much power by the Supreme Court....to which he countered by asking congress to allow him to appoint more justices - one's who would favor what he had in mind. (we haven't even discussed the way he manipulated the US into ww2)
YET - history veiws him as a great president.
and thus so will probably be seen as a great president too - even Nixon is given his highlights (heck, even Jimmy Carter is given highlights)
