Hot Day Coming

How do I know that today will be really hot?

The Newfoundland is already barking to get into the house so she can curl inside her 'cave' (i.e. cage/kennel) in the basement where it is cool.

I mean normally she will bark if I put her out and forget to feed her - in fact she's insistant - or she has dumped her water - although that's usually for attention. However today it has been bark, bark, bark, bark.

Always at the doors and never at the street, so its not the joggers or bikers ... and we don't have motorcycles down the lane either.

She just wants IN ... she does have her 'bomb shelter' that she can go into, but somehow it has lost its appeal without the door to rip off anymore. It will be interesting to see what she will do once it is fixed.

but ....

its going to be a hot day.

hubby wanted to put in the window unit air conditioners and I talked him out of it. They have such big gaps that I have to go around and tape up around them all and that is such a pain to try to find the light holes.

but the hottest room this year will be the boys' room.

their window shade finally gave way this winter and they don't make this kind anymore. I know you are thinking 'why not just get a new one?' Well let me explain....

we live in a concrete house. not just a brick house ... or one that uses cinder blocks ... a SOLID concrete house. And as it turned out when we got the rooms painted before moving in, we learned that they used metal in the walls of the windows.

They are like fake/mock/faux bay windows that are slanted ... but they are nice and deep so that I can get a large (not huge) floor pot on each one, and wide enough so that I can get at least 4 across in each one. I really like them! Think bookshelf deep. The old house had window sills so small that you couldn't even put a candle holder on one of them.

Well the metal part lends itself to a lot of issues - one of which is peeling paint since its hard to get an interior paint that will adhere properly with weather changes. The other is drilling to put in hardware -- ahh there's the rub.

We need a drill that can go thru the top layer of concrete without breaking it, thru the metal without dulling to go into the concrete on the other side without knocking the wall apart.

I used to wonder why my MIL didn't have a lot of things on her walls - now I know why. Of course I was never a big wall decorator myself - I change my mind too much - so until we moved here I actually had very little by way of wall decoration ... a photo of each kid was about it, maybe a couple of shelves....that's it.

My mother on the other hand!

Ooops --- tangent again .... I was talking about that window shade and the heat.

So as you can see putting up a new shade is not as easy as one might think.

oh well - it has to get done. I will have to figure out something -- maybe make a hanging shade from hooks ... you know some of those Command ones that stick to just about anything. Time to get the thinking cap on again.

I think I will probably regret talking hubby out of putting in window units by this afternoon -- but we will see.
