Election 2008

Alaska AG Says No to Subpoenas in Probe of Official’s Firing by Palin - America’s Election HQ:
"In a letter to the Democratic state senator overseeing the investigation, Attorney General Talis Colberg asks that the subpoenas be withdrawn. He also says the employees will not appear before the investigator unless either the full state Senate or the entire Alaska Legislature votes to compel their testimony.

Last week, a committee of lawmakers issued subpoenas for 13 people, including Todd Palin, the governor’s husband, in the investigation of whether the governor fired her public safety chief for refusing to dismiss her former brother-in-law, an Alaska State Trooper."
I don't know how they can subpeona Mr. Palin ... they can not compel spouses to testify against each other -- they can volunteer but they can not force them to do it ... and the committee should have known this.

I'm wondering though, under what rule the State's Attorney General could protect the workers from testifying? I mean, I've heard that they can't subpeona Secret Service agents because there is an implied confientiality there -- the President can't be without them, yet he still needs to carry on business, etc. -- but I can't see where that would then also apply to other state workers.

Plus, my understanding is that the safety chief in question didn't really get fired .... he was going to be moved to a different position for not doing several parts of his job, and he chose not to take that lateral change - I my mind, he quit, he didn't get fired.

And the trooper in question, while yes he was her ex-brother in law, was guilty of several violations of the law .... not just local & state laws, but also federal laws. And considering that one of those federal charges was a gaming violation (which sounds like 'poaching' to me) I would think the tree-hugging-PETA-GreenPeace enviromentalists would stick by her on it ... oops, sorry - I forgot they only like democrats.

What gets me is how quickly they are pushing for this .... after all before she was announced as McCain's running mate they were pretty much taking things at their own pace ... slow & calm.

They can still "go after" her after she is VP ... just like they did Spiro Agnew for tax fraud, bribery, and extortion. Many of the charges stemme not only from his time as Gov. but also before that. So there is no real rush to get things done.

The only true rush here is the election. Why?
Who benefits from rushing this?
Palin? nope don't see how airing dirty laundry helps her at all.
McCain? nope its still bad press and doesn't look good for him.
Alaska? not really, it doesn't really help the state at all to look like they have problems with their employees.
the committee? well it would look good to 'get' her, it doesn't really benefit them all that much when you think about it.
Obama/Biden? Well it does give lots of negative press to the other side. and it will give them a boost in the polling.

Yeah I think we have a winner. Only ones that benefit from pushing this is the BO/JB team.
