"Video from a camera mounted in the deputy's car shows Winkfein cursing and challenging the deputy and even daring him to use the Taser on her.I think this was more a case of "Old enough to know better, stupid enough not to care" I have watched the video of this stop several times, cut in several ways .... and I'm sorry ... she ASKED for it -- no she literally said "go ahead, taz me! I dare you"
'You're going to shove me? You're going to shove a 72-year-old woman?' she yelled. Winkfein told KTBC-TV in Austin that she did nothing to provoke the use of the Taser."
She challenged this cop, and challenged this cop ... and when she found he wasn't going to back down she went to get into her car -- I'm sorry --- I don't care how old you are, the officer has no idea what the heck you've got in your car no matter what state you are in ~~ and forgive the stereotype ~~ but my understanding is that in Texas it isn't unusual for elderly folk to carry weapons in their truck ...
and let's face it, she was not acting 'normal' .... she was driving 60 in a 45 zone .... she refused to sign her ticket (against the law in TX) ... she challenged the cop over & over again ... she refused arrest ... she laid hands on the cop (oooooh, that's assaulting an officer) .... then she tried pushing him back into traffic [although I'm not saying she meant to push him into traffic] ....
was it something I'd want to have happen to my MIL? or my father? No ... but then I would hope that they have enough common sense to comply with the officer's instructions/demands.
This officer did not ask her to do anything wrong .... he did not ask her to do anything that would endanger her life or that of others ... he did not attempt to assault her. He did nothing that should have caused her to fuss the way she did.
My daughter is looking at a career in law inforcement --- you know, I would have no issue with her doing this sort of thing under these circumstances.
I've heard people saying "what would have happened if she had died from the taser" ... "why didn't he just over power her and cuff her?" (oh he tried that twice, btw) .... but you know -- what would have happened if he had allowed her to get hit by a car? what if she had pushed him into traffic? what if she had a weapon in that car? what if .... what if....
the cop doesn't have enough time to come up with all the 'what ifs' in life -- he had to act to the situation on hand .... could you imagine the outcry if he had wrestled her to the ground to cuff her? OMGs --- look at what happened when the cops had to do that to a pregnant woman???
WTF do people want to have happen? Should he have let her go? it was a 45 zone -- so it was either near a residential area ... what if he let her go and she plowed down some kid? perhaps the speed was set low because of the road's condition - sharp turns, cross traffic, entry/exit ramps - what if she got in an accident if he had just let her go? Then he would be getting sued for not taking appropriate action.
Nope -- have to stick up for the officer on this one.
