"The thin array of ice and dust particles lies at the far reaches of the Saturnian system and its orbit is tilted 27 degrees from the planet's main ring plane, the laboratory said."So let me get this straight -- Pluto isn't a 'full' planet any more because the scientists couldn't explain its tilted orbit (even though they did find it has two moons of its own ... although I consider it a binary-planet with a single satellite) .... but this does qualify as a ring of Saturn??
And even then its not a normal ring ... the other rings are made of chunks & dust which orbit at a fairly regular interval and are shepherded by the moons to keep them in their place.
As far as they can tell with this ring -- there are no shepherd moons, just feeder moons. The particles are coming from Phoebe, which is really a captured asteroid I'm told - as meteors impact the surface of Phoebe and dust/particles fly off they are collecting in this 'ring' ... some of the particulate matter crash into another nearby 'moon' and it also sends out fodder for the 'ring' to feed on.
BUT the point is -- if Pluto doesn't qualify as a planet but rather is being considered a Kieper Belt object which was captured by the Sun's gravity .... which doesn't make sense, why would it have a satellite then, much less two ...
and since we know that in the Universe microcosms reflect what we other wise see -- once Jupiter had the most moons with 9 and now look how many there are ... so ... if Sautrn & Jupiter are examples of how things CAN BE then why is the Astrophysical community so frightened by the thought that .... gee .... we may actually have 20 planets to our system??
I mean they are finding moons within ring systems -- shouldn't this also mean that planets should be able to be within the Kieper Belt?
Ring? Naw not really - give it about 50 yrs, they'll down grade it.
