This outage was caused by a fire at/on/in a transformer (not sure which way was correct) ... it will take a while to get power going again I would think.
You would have thought that with all the power outages they had in the 70s (most of the decade was spent in the dark there it seemed like. Then there was Hurricane Sandy that hit everywhere and knocked out power.
I don't know what redundancies they have built in - here in MN our system is pretty well set up so in the big cities they just have to flip a switch to redirect the power from one system to another so the outage is a inimum - then when they fix the issue they flip a switch and go back to normal, heck half the time you don't even know it happened ... the only times we have long power outages are when LINES get damaged either by storm or construction error. (That's a good story too)
So I would think they could just reroute the power from a different transformer but it sounds like the entire upper west side of the island. I'm guessing if they don't get it up soon their gonna have some looting going on.
Now back to the Tornado Watch that AOC freaked out about ... NWS will tell you this means that conditions are such that there could possibly be conditions for tornados conditions but there has been no signs as of yet - usually hot/steamy weather and a strong cool front expected to hit as well - anyone from the MidWest will tell you a Watch equates to "Watch, we'll be wrong again" ...
My app is acting up, so here is the official response from the power company there:
AOC acted as though a Tornado WARNING had been issued - which would mean that's they have evidence of strong winds, hail, wall cloud formation, and cyclonic activity either reported by a TRAINED observer or by radar - in the MdWest we say it means Warning we're really gonna be wrong this time.
AOC was sitting wherever it was she was doing a podcast and got the weather alert - immediately blamed global warming for making it more likely that we are having severe weather ... actually we aren't having more severe weather it's just that there's more data points being recorded, it skews the data but they will never tell you that ... anyways, she's sitting indoors and looks out the window and sees people sitting there
She exclaims " oh no! There's people outside - we have to get them out!"
First - it's a damned warning, only once continent doesn't have tornadoes and that covered with ice and no permanent population so we don't really know for sure it doesn't have tornadoes
Second - the skies at the time were barely overcast, no rain in sight
Thirdly - is he people were INSIDE a covered BUS STOP!! While not Tornado proof, they were not gonna get rained or hailed on which usually comes first
Lastly - AOC needs to learn the DIFFERENCE between GLOBAL WARMING/CLIMATE CHANGE and a WEATHER EVENT!!!!!! In fact MOST coastal people do -- they have a vast amount of weather on the coast but for some reason they never seem to remember one year to the next ...
Maybe it's because along the NE coastline everyone seems to either take a train or subway - where in the Midwest we had to either walk to school or get a ride if we lived within 2 1/2 miles from school (weird part was that we lived on the same side of the street as the bus stop but they said I wasn't far enough from school
