"It is clear that we can not develop while being cut from the entire world ... "
Vladimir Putin, Russian President
So, not a lot of people know just how close Russia was to being defeated during WW2 ... my understanding is that had Germany been able to hold out for just a few months longer (easier said than done) it was very likely that Russia would have depleted their resources and would have had to surrender ...
but you've gotta give one to Stalin -- he wasn't so stupid to think that Hitler was going to keep his promise of their alliance, in fact, he had planned for the "What If" sceneria of Hitler turning the German forces upon Russia.
He began ordering supplies be set up for "fall back" positions -- and Russia is a HUGE country ... so the farther the Germans worked their way into Rusiia, the farther they got from their supplies. Since Germany couldn't have imagined that Stalin would have known what was coming, they never thought to swoop in and take what the Russians had ... well ... the Russian soldiers, and even then it was only the officers for the most part.
So much for the communist/socialist view of "equality"
The issue with Putin feeling this was though is ... he will take it as a sign that he will need to invade MORE countries to get the resources they need.
Maybe he should join NATO ... oh wait ... he's against that, isn't he?
