Okay - so I am not a huge baseball fan ... although I do like watching minor league ball online ... well I did, until our local station stopped streaming it on YouTube ... but major league?
Naw ... not my thing
So the fact that this gambling scandal has caught my attention should say a lot ...
Apparently, there's this guy from Japan - he happens to be in his early 20s and is the highest paid player in MLB - Major League Baseball - you know the guys who play in the World Series ...
Well a story broke last week that linked him to paying gambling debts ... kind of a major thing -- remember Pete Rose??
If you don't, he was a player, then a coach, who was caught betting on baseball games - he will NEVER be admitted into he Baseball Hall of Fame (honestly, it was part of his punishment), had to pay a huge fine, lost his job, and I think even served some jail time.
Professional sports in the USA takes gambling VERY SERIOUSLY ...
So this guy was looking at the end of his career before it even started, really.
He came with his own interpreter - and they guy happened to be a good friend of the phenom - I guess it was part of his contractt that this friend would come wih him.
As it turns out, the betting was being placed BY THE INTERPRETER/FRIEND .... but the money to PAY for the debt was coming from the baseball guys account.
Um .... sounds a tad fishy to me.
Like maybe the friend placed the bets for the player because he could speak the language for the player, who then paid to place the bets.
But NO
The current story is:
The INTERPRETER had a long history of sports betting, and placed the bets ... but then STOLE money from the players bank account to cover his bets.
I'd want to know how the "friend" got the password to the account ... I mean the young adults of today have to know more than someone my age about NOT sharing your passwords ... right?
There was a press conference yesterday, where the player Just Sat There ... and the NEW interpreter READ A STATEMENT written by the player ... the player didn't say a word (according to Good Morning America, ABC)
So WHY was there even a press congerence???
Couldn't this have simply been handled by a press release?
It will be interesting to see how this developes ....
as well as how the player will be GREETED by the teams home town on opening weekend ...
The only thing he's got going for him is that he's playing for the DODGERS ...
I'm sure that's just a coincidence ....
