What happens when there's a La Nina winter AND a Santa Ana Wind event going on at the same time??
Well - it looks like the SOUTH gets ALL the SNOW ...
Wait ... what?!?!?!?!
Yeah - so in MN/WI ... at least where I'm at ... we have gotten a whpping 15 inshes or something like that ....
But, you'd never know it by looking outside ...
Why?
Because for that itty-bit of snow we've gotten, we've had cold weather MORE often than not ...
And when it gets too cold - snow can't form .... mostly because COLD air DOESN'TThave to carry very much MOISTURE ...
It's a DRY AIR .... thus, the reason you have to drink more (almost anything with WATER as the base, non-alcoholic) .... your skin dries out, your feet will crack (especially the heels), your lips will split & bleed, then there's what it does to any WOOD in your home - you have to polish your furniture if it's made of wood every week, else it will crack like your heels.
BUT - We're USED to this ... some of us even LOVE it ... like ME ...
This year though???
New Orleans has gotten MORE snow in a single storm than we have ... they got around 10 inches of powder this weekend ...
They have no idea what to do in it ... other than snowball fights ...
They don't know how to DRIVE in it - if you go too slow, you have no traction, if you go too fast you have no control - it takes practice to know how to drive in it ....
And you know it's a wet snow - meaning it's going to have a lot of water content .... maybe 3 inches for every inch that would have been rain ... and if they don't get it off the streets, it's going to freeze harder than concrete - even in the Gulf heat, it will take a month to melt.
Actually - it might even be worse than that ....
In the Northern Midwest, we get "pot holes" - they are divots which form in the roadway when melted snow or rain, finds cracks in the roadtop ... they don't have to be huge, just deeper than you think - deep enough to get UNDER the pavement ...
When this happens, it will then freeze - well, if you've ever put a can of soda in a freezer to cool it down quickly, then you know what's gonna happen ...
Water EXPANDS when it freezes - roadtop does not like to move ... not a microbit ... the water pushes up, the cars/trucks weight pushes down ... all this back & forth, and like playing with a loose tooth, somethings gotta give - and generally its the roadtop ....
Poor - instant Pot Hole ...
BUT it could get even worse than that ... it could be even MORE dynamic ... more EXPLOSIVE ...
The south gets lots of RAIN ... and last year it got hit with some pretty hefty hurricaines - many spots which are now geting hitt with this cold front - but they are areas where i gets hot ... steamy ...
Now those roads are like POPCORN KERNELS in a microwave ... the water has leeched under the raods ... because it's an area which is below sea level already, it has NO PLACE TO GO ... so it just sits ....
Waiting ...
The spring heat comes in ... the humidity starts up as normal ...
If they are lucky - it will simply come out of the roads as steam ... the "kernels" are DUDS ... those Old Maids which can break a tooth, but in this case it's the best scenerio ...
If they have Bad Luck, they will begin to see he roads break up ... cracks will grow ... holes will form ... divots will eat away, and repair bills & slow traffic will plague them for years to come ...
If they NO LUCK at all - then the roads will EXPLODE like a piece of popcorn in the microwave - roadway will fly everywhere ... taking out anything on top of it ...
Don't believe me?
Check out videos on YouTube about what happens in many MN summers ... if it gets above 90F up here in the summer - people stay on their toes, because even up here, the roads might EXPLODE!
