Oh Gads, she's reading the news again!

Obesity a problem in HIV population - Yahoo! News

I'm sorry....I think weight is the least of these people's concerns right now! Actually as I was reading the article it struck me that the doctor they interviewed was talking that it was a problem for people to lose 10% of their body weight....let's do some math:

In a 200lb person....10%=20lbs
In a 100lb person...10=10lbs

I don't know, that doesn't seem that bad....what the article doesn't say is how quickly they lost that weight.

Now it does say that the overweight population with HIV mirrors that of the population w/o HIV...to this it means these people are normal....you know, when the mass population is showing the same numbers, and it seems to be a trend...the weight-thing? It could just be evolution!!!!!

OMG--here's a tell-tale quote:

"Researchers did not find a connection between the AIDS drugs and excess weight. When patients gained weight, they tended to put on an average of 13 pounds over a decade. Those who became infected younger, those who had the virus for a longer time, or those who had high blood pressure were more likely to get fat."

Excuse me?? 13 pounds over a decade? For those of you keeping score at home, that's slightly more than a pound a year--oh no!! BITE ME! Oh and btw, all people who suffer from high-blood pressure are more likely to "get fat".

An even better reason to hold this study in suspect:

"The numbers are particularly striking because most of those studied were in the military (some were military spouses) and tend to be in better shape than the rest of the population."

So exactly how many military personale have HIV? My guess is very few...at least no where near enough to make a study that would result in any genuine, reliable studies.

Now here's a quote for you:

"Jack Gebhardt, 56, of Los Angeles, said he started packing on the pounds after he quit smoking shortly before he was diagnosed with HIV 12 years ago. After working out three times a week, Gebhardt, who is 5-feet-8, went from 217 to 172 pounds.
A diabetic who is on disability, Gebhardt currently cannot afford a gym membership and has seen his weight creep back up to 182.
"I'd still like to lose a lot more weight," he said. "

Wait, wait, wait....did you see the rub in this quote? The man was already a diabetic....I've known enough diabetics in my life to know that diabetes and heavy-set go hand-in-hand! The other thing that stuck out to me is that this man is 5ft. 8in. tall...182lbs is perfectly fine--hell 200 lbs on that frame is fine.

Let's look at a few people:
Tom Brady (QB for the NewEngland Patriots Football team)....6'4", 225 lbs...BMI=27.4...overweight?

Matt Birk (Center for the MN Vikings football team).....6'4", 309...BMI=37.6....Obese??? Not if you saw the man!

Clark Gable (famous actor)....6'1", 190lbs(in his heyday)...BMI=25.1....overweight

Arnold Schwarzeneggar (bodybuilder/actor/governor of CA)....6'2", 235lbs(body competition peak)...BMI=30.2....Obese! Yeah right...he would go to 260lbs in the off-season and had a BMI=33.4 but I think he was safe.

Casry Grant (famous actor)....6'1", 180lbs (at peak)...BMI=23.7...normal range

Dennis Rodman (former basketball player/clown)....6'6", 220lbs....BMI=25.4....overweight? Are you kidding me? Have you seen how skinny this guy is??
BTW, when he graduated from high school he was only....5'10"....most guys are done growing by the time they are 18yrs old....hmmm, I think someone had an operation...but at 5'10", 220lbs....BMI=31.6....overweight!

Okay granted three of my examples are people in incredible shape....Rodman is questionable, in my mind....and the actors are hardly ones that we would call "fat" by any means, especially in an industry that pushes for the lighter side of weight...yet the charts don't make a distiction between lean:fat ratios, so they give an incomplete picture...neither do statistics...and neither did the doctors who did this study--neither did they take age into consideration....you will notice the single guy they used in the story was over 50yrs old, but they only went by his height/weight....

Its a really bad study that should be questioned instead of touted!
