New Klondike Kate dons the sash for 2008
Now before anyone makes any comments about this lady's size---shut up!
In MN 'Klondike Kate' ranks up there with Miss America, Miss Minnesota, and is more popular than 'Princess Kay of the Milky Way'!
Why do we celebrate Kate? Because when the territory first opened up to trappers she offered a warm meal, hot fire, and companionship at her establishment....okay it was probably a brothel.
Who was Klondike Kate? Well there is some controversy on that front....there were a lot of ladies that called themselves or got called Klondike Kate and we may never know the true idenity of the original. It has simply become a generic term these days to indicate a robust woman who is very giving and caring while being shrewd....there is even one theory that "Miss Kitty" from Gunsmoke (radio/television series) was a take off of Klondike Kate---'Kitty' being one of the diverations of Katherine, 'Kate' is as well.
So this is a beauty/talent show that is for real women....no skinny stick figures, super lean super-models, 'Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen' wannabes need apply. It is a place to see women, like the ones you see everyday...the girl next door, down the street, three cubicles over....not some spray-painted, plastic Barbie doll.
