AF General: Spy satellite could hit US - Yahoo! News: "Military agencies, he said, are doing an analysis to determine which pieces would most likely survive re-entry. But he cautioned that officials won't have much detail on where or when it will crash until it begins to move through the atmosphere and break up"
When the Skylab fell, NASA was able to tell where the flight path would take it about a week before it actually fell into the atmosphere....
perhaps this was because Skylab was slowly losing altitude and changing orbit in a predictable manner. But maybe this spy satellite will be such that its rate of orbital decay is less predictable.
This would make it doubly dangerous because then they would not know if it was going to take anything else out with it...causing two objects falling in stead of one.
Because the path could be in any of the three countries of North America--one has to wonder then if it doesn't have an orbit that goes from north to south instead of the normal sine wave pattern around the Earth. If this is the case then it is also plausible that it could come down in any number of countries who claim to 'own' part of the north pole region.
