Okay .... so I'm attached to the cord for my laptop in my room .... I've got to have audio stimulation while typing--its something that started in college while working on term papers--anyways so I popped it on the History Channel (great channel if you don't have it on your cable/satellite you need to ask for it).
They are re-running "1968 With Tom Brokaw" where he does interviews and reviews the events of that pivotal year of American History (MLK's & RFK's assassinations, election news, etc)
Well a little known bit of history was brought up---a bit that has been totally white washed and swept under the carpet here in MN.
In 1968 Lyndon B Johnson announced that he was not going to run for nor accept the nomination of the democratic party for the seat of president. He was done---well the Vice-President, our very own Hubert H Humphrey---the one who is held up as the quinesential democrat....we have streets, buildings, arena's, etc named after this man (everything except a state holiday)....this man decided that he was going to run for the office.
Completely understandable--its common for a vice-president to run for the office....but he ran on the ticket that he was going to STAY IN VIET NAM!!!!! While he did make a speech in Utah just before the election changing his position on the bombing of Vietnam, but this was seen as more finger-in-the-air politics which he was famous for.
Did you get that? So all you people who whine about how Iraq is another vietnam and so we have to get the republican out....remember this.
It was democrats that put us there and democrats that wanted us to stay---it was the republicans (i.e. Nixon) that got us out of vietnam!!!
The problems with the republican party got its bad name when the kids protesting at Columbia university, tieing up traffic, causing civil disobedience and rioting were arrested and the police took matters into their own hands.
People forget so much---but I'm surprised that Clinton would being that she was one of the kids protesting. Now the democrats have done a really good job at white washing the whole matter so no one knows the truth of their history....their support of war in the past.....
And in case anyone gets asked this during a game of Trivial Pursuit:
President Kennedy was the one who proposed going into VietNam, President Johnson took the trrops in and refused to pull them, President Nixon was the one who began to pull out troops and finally brought all our boys home.
The hostages in Iran---were taken under President Carter's administration, he sent a failed rescue mission which nearly cost them the hostages their lives and cost us some really good soldiers, it took President Reagan to get them out.
Remember it now.
