Tomayto .... Tomahto

Okay so I have one kid home sick (thanks to a combo of soda, chocolate, overcooked ham, and lemon meringe pie) and he is telling me about this great book series he's reading ---THANK GOODNESS, he has to read 1000 pages every 3 months so a series he enjoys reading is a big help.

Anyhow he is reading the Deltora series and one of the characters is named "Lief" .... he says its pronounced "leaf" .... I say its pronounce "Layf" like Leif Erickson.

Well .... you try arguing with a kid who spent most of the night with his face in the toilet.

So how do you pronounce it?

I tried finding wav/mp3 files on line and got both answers for the same word.
wonder if its like the word 'harrassment'....two different ways to say it but both with the same meaning.
