"The state education department on Monday directed the charter school to 'correct' two areas related to religion at the school on Monday.Yes this is the same school that I wrote about in April.
Tarik ibn Zayad Academy, which focuses on Middle Eastern culture and shares a mosque with the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, came under fire after a teacher alleged that the school was offering religious instruction in Islam to its students."
The Dept. of Ed. FINALLY decided to do something about it (now that the school year is nearly done) ... yes there are law suits pending on both sides.
"...The agency said it was concerned about the school, with about 300 students, accommodating communal prayer and providing transportation to an after-school religious program.
"We have directed the school to take appropriate corrective actions regarding these matters and will continue to provide oversight to ensure that the school is in compliance with state and federal law," Anderson said..."From what I heard in one radio news broadcast, the school was ordered to provide busing for students who chose NOT to participate in the after school religious program. It also has to have a program in place for students who chose NOT to participate in the prayer services that take place during school hours --- now this means that if a child decides they do not wish to go, even if they are islam, the school can not FORCE them to go any more than a Catholic school can forced their kids to go to morning mass.
The school sees this as a 'minor' glitch. Funny, they didn't consider it a 'minor' glitch when other schools had an issue with the head wraps the girls have to wear. No other kids can wear head wraps or hats during school ... just the muslim/islamic girls ... yeah, that fair (not).
You can't force kids to participate in your religion and keep your public funding. Which means that the school will either have to start lock-stepping with the law ... or become a private school - but they will not have enough students to pay for itself.
