Clothing and gestures will be scrutinized at Olympics - Yahoo! News: "The IOC sent a six-point letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, to the national Olympic federations in response to their request for interpretations of Rule 51.3 of the Olympic charter. That rule states 'no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.'
The letter expanded on the rule, saying: 'The conduct of participants at all sites, areas and venues includes all actions, reactions, attitudes or manifestations of any kind by a person or group of persons, including but not limited to their look, external appearance, clothing, gestures, and written or oral statements"
So the Olympics will now sqwash personal freedoms? They will stop free speech and free expression?
While I agree that athletes and their representatives should not participate in blatant 'insults' such as demonstrations at the host countries expense ... but how can they regulate what a person wears?? And who will decide whether it is offensive or not?
While I'm sure they would jump all over someone wearing a "Free Tibet" t-shirt ... I have to wonder if they saw one referring to global warming or even one calling for the oust of Pres. Bush .... my guess is that those are one's that will slide.
