Salmonella outbreak linked to raw tomatoes strikes about 150 - USATODAY.com: "Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and home-grown tomatoes are not associated with the outbreak, Acheson says." Okay - you really have to read the article but here is the jest of it:
1. it is the slicing, roma, plum tomatoes that seem to be the cause ... the others seem fine (so far they are only saying the red tomatoes, but I'd avoid the other colors too)
2. canned tomatoes should be fine because of the tempuratures used to produce them will normally kill the bacteria.
3. it could be the industry standard that is causing the issue. Tomatoes are picked generally on warm days (makes sense, you can see the color better) and then the 'matoes are plunged into cold water to stop over ripening before they get to the store - plunging them in the cold water pulls the germs from the outside of the 'matoes to the inside so that the only way to kill the bacteria would be to sauce it for an hour or so.
4. there are several options still available to you (see the list above) ... but McDonald's has announced that they are going to stop putting tomatoes on their items until the source is found. (wow ... taco bell's going to get a kick in their .... bells)
well .... I was planning on making potato salad for the Father's Day barbeque but I guess I will be keeping out the tomatoes ... of course I suppose I could slice some grape tomatoes, but it will take sooooooo long.
I'm wondering if the seeds could be affected as well...maybe its in the seeds, but probably not.
