"The Bush administration urged the Supreme Court to reject the appeal....Yes that is right -- President Bush, who people accuse of being pro-oil asked the Supreme Court to allow an oil company to be not only sued but to have the result of the suit stand.
...Due to fears for their safety, the Acehnese plaintiffs in the suit against Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil are all named as John or Jane Does.
Justice Samuel Alito, who owns Exxon Mobil stock, did not take part in the decision. The case is Exxon Mobil v. John Doe, 07-81."
Remember Exxon was trying to get the case completely thrown out of the courts...a pro-oil president would have urged that the court did toss it, not reject it.
Personally .... I can't see where Exxon can be held liable for the actions performed by the Indonesian soldiers even if they had hired them....although I do suspect that there is a lot left out of the story - I may have to do a little more research on this.
