"The incident occurred at Randall and St. Lawrence avenues in the Soundview section of the borough. Witnesses say the sweeper came speeding down the street, swerving to avoid a speed bump, before yanking the dog, a Boston terrier named Ginger, right out of its leash"Poor doggy - just minding its own business when -- slllluuuurrp - Toto-ized.
Although I have to say most normal people would have seen the big ass street sweeper coming and would have moved away from the street - especially making sure the little doggie was out of the way.
I didn't think those machines could get about 25 mph - and vehicles tend to look like they are going faster than they really are (found this out when we had the radar monitor put on our street because we thought people were speeding).
BUT - lets remember that having headphones on while operating a motor vehicle is against the law so he should at least lose points for that one. As far as the dog goes - that's a property issue ... and depending on how NY deals with property damage by their workers this family may get a small petince of what it thinks it deserves.
They will get the 'worth' of that dog - or that is, what they could get for the dog if they sold it on the open market (maybe $300 - 500).
Sad but true.
But the story itself raises a bit of questions because it seems to contradict its own 'facts':
Ginger and her mate, Buster, were both on leashes on the side of the street when the sweeper approached. ...
... He came so close to the car that he sucked the dog off the leash," said Isamar Maldonado, who saw the horrifying incident...
um .... what car? I thought he was avoiding a speed bump ... I thought the dog's were on the curb?
somethings not adding up here.
