okay so this Super Collider thing is really important .... a lot more important that most people believe. how do I know? because Google has spoofed it in their logo.
Okay so I know the scientists are saying "its nothing to worry about" .... but let's think this thing thru a bit shall we?
Big Bang Theory: the creation of the Universe in all its splender. Two loan particles, the theory goes, banged into each other at such a velocity that they actually fused together without the invent of super-glue.
The resulting collision of these two particles released so much radiation, and thus heat, that it triggered all the other elements to be formed. now that was just two particles ... the assumption has been that it must have been two loan hydrogen molecules because it is the simplist form we know of ....
so What are they doing in this Super Collider? Why they are going to take a bunch of particles and send them high speed at each other -- until the crash into each other. They are using magnets to keep everything lined up and narrow, so they can make sure there will be a maximum number of collisions.
And they don't see any issue in this.
Have you ever made homemade soda? if you have too much pressure build up in the bottle, it won't matter what container you put it in the bottle will burst. This thing is little more than a bottle of fermenting soda waiting to blow its top!
Now to make it worse - they think its better - they put this thing under ground. Now the hope is that having it under ground will dampen any problems like a blanket on a balloon when you pop it.
I don't buy it I think it will make it worse. When we made pop we put the bottles in a plasitc tub under the butcher's block, figuring if one of the bottles burst it would be contained in the container ... pretty smart move - until it happened.
Then we learned that when one bottle bursts it will take every other bottle around it with it, which in-turn will blow the bottles next to them. This will result in a build up in pressure within the container to eventually take out the container as well. Not only did we still have soda from ceiling to floor from one end of the room to the other -- but we had 9 out of 12 burst bottles, 2 others getting ready to blow within minutes (it took a bit to release that pressure carefully so we didn't have more mess) and one totalled plastic storage container -- I mean this thing was totally FUBAR'd .... we had peices that were completely missing and we still haven't figured out where they went.
Now imagine this on a global level .... the collider is basically the plastic container and each particle they are sending around a pop bottle ... only difference is - their plastic container is placed within another container of highly unstable chemicals (our planet - our core) that they have no idea how to handle should it go off.
The worry is that, well beyond actually retriggering molecule instability, the experiment will get out of hand and continue to feed itself on the Earth's fuel eventually leading to the core - which they really don't know much about, but they theorize that if anything should happen to it ... we would be little more than, um, dead rock!!!
Well ... maybe I shouldn't get on the kids' cases so much over their grades. After all if the scientists keep this up - well the Mayans did say the world would come to the end in 2012 .... right?
