Group asks IRS to investigate Catholic bishop against Obama - USATODAY.com:

"Under federal tax law, nonprofit groups — including religious organizations — are prohibited from intervening in campaigns for public office by endorsing or opposing candidates."

Actually the law states that they can not preach a political view from the pulpit ... else they risk losing their tax-exempt status.

I have never seen anything that says that it can't be published ... otherwise I can think of a few churches (the Catholic church most prominently) who would be in trouble over this.

We had a situation come up in our state not that long ago where one of the church's had one of the candidates for a state office speak and they wound up being investigated by the IRS over this matter.

The way the church got away with it was that the speech was not delivered by the pastor nor did it take place behind the pulpit -- but they were given a stern warning over it.

However, there are several groups which DO (take a look at some of the cable religious stations) come right out and support or denounce a particular candidate. hell if that were the case -- the Rev. Wrights church should lose there status as well!!!

Now about the article itself:
It did not denounce Obama, it did however point out that Obama plans to sign an Abortion Rights Bill which the Catholic church opposes (well, DUH) ....

This is less about politics and more about attacking the Catholic Church, if you ask me. Look I am no huge fan of the new Pope and the way he is taking the Church ... but even I can see that there is a lot of anti-Catholism out there.

don't believe me? try this next time something surprising happens to you in public - cross yourself (for those who don't know ... use your right hand ... up/down, left to right ... or as my brother said "spectacles, testicles, checkbook & watch") ... now look at the people around you...

You'll find some will look at you like you have a second head ... some will move away like you fell into a bucket of Uck ... others will chuckle in that 'nut case' manner (your one, not them) ... very few will act like there's nothing wrong with it.

that's just the tip of the iceberg. only thing worse than being Catholic these days, is being a Pagan/Heathen these days.
