Wow - I thought there would be a place to find this info ... now I don't have to spend the $ for it!
Leigh's Fiber Journal: Measuring Wraps Per Inch (WPI)
I just got a length of 1/4" dowel too! I was going to make some homemade dpns for making hats with ... and it turns out to be the right size -- whoo hoo ... actually...
You can use a size 10 1/2 needle too ... that is 1/4 inch in diameter.
now they do have Knit-Stix (I think that's what they are called, I've got a bunch) which are needles with ruler marks on them already so you don't have to go thru that part of it, but they don't have the notch to hold the yarn in place while wrapping ... but it would be a great place to start ... especially if you have a set and they get a bend in them ...
waste not want not!
