Sen. Leahy proposes truth panel on Bush era abuses:

"Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said the primary goal of the commission would be to learn the truth rather than prosecute former officials, but said the inquiry should reach far beyond misdeeds at the Justice Department under Bush to include matters of Iraq prewar intelligence and the Defense Department.
Leahy outlined his suggestion for a 'truth and reconciliation' commission during a speech at Georgetown University Monday.
'I'm doing this not to humiliate people or punish people but to get the truth out,' he said" {excuse me while I try to stop laughing over this last statement}

I think Leahy better be careful with his "Truth and Reconciliation" moves -- it will open a kettle of worms that I don't think he wants to get into.

The President of the United States has always been accorded the priviledge of 'immunity' for actions taken under the role of President that protect the United States.

This was also the same thing that kept President Clinton from being procecuted for alleged rape charges and sexual harassment charges that were made while he was President ... it did not save him from these same activities while he was Governor, even though they came out after he was President, because he did not have the office to protect him ... even then the reason the 'disappeared' was because they were settled out of court from my understanding.

It will open up to our 'enemies' the workings of our intelligence agencies so they can learn to avoid them ... and cut off our intel ...

but the worse thing is ... it WEAKENS the Presidency in the eyes of the world. While the President isn't a King, by far, could you imagine what would have happened to the presidency if there had been an 'investigation' over Kennedy getting us into Vietnam, or about Lincoln getting us into the Civil war?

I mean, yes there have been independant studies ... historical looks ... but nothing by the CONGRESS itself.

This should be looked at as a form of treason in my mind.

Completely politically motivated and morally wrong.
