Here's what we are getting (bend over):
- by 2016, all automakers MUST boost efficiency standards (starting in with the 2012 model year)
- cars must have 39 mpg
- trucks must have 30 mpg (your 'get up & go' just 'got up and left')
- 30% reduction in emissions (cadillacic convertors have their own set of issues - now the nation will feel our pain)
- Admin estimates that the plan will add about $1300 per vehicle (of course they aren't factoring in other costs which will actually make that about $2500/car)
- Cost to automakers? $13Billion - $20Billion A YEAR!!! oh look - more bail outs!
- cars must have 39 mpg
I do not need to know the laws regarding what to do if there is an Alligator in the road ... nor does someone in FL need to know the laws regarding driving on an AK Ice Road.
Okay so here's what they have snowed Obama into believing:
- could save 1.8 billion barrels of oil over the next 5 yrs (hmm, look just after the next election)
- could eliminate 900Million metric tons of greenhouse gas (there's several problems with this thought -- while it may not produce NEW gases, it will not eliminate any existing gases)
Sounds like he has been well snowed on this one ... they have him convinced that the new cars will pay themselves off (well that extra "$1300") in just 3 yrs by the savings at the fuel pump -- no it won't ... fuel is going to cost what it costs - you will save NOTHING on that side of the equation ... in fact you will probably pay MORE for gas in many parts of the nation as the refineries will have to switch their blends to meet the standards of the newer cars --- and we all know how any little hiccup at the refinaries can effect prices!
Then there will be the increase in insurance rates because the lighter materials will make it more likely that you will be seriously hurt, more likely killed, in a car accident.
The newer cars will be harder to fix - the lighter materials are more likely to be beyond repair - causing more cars to be "totalled out" ... putting more wrecks into the junk yards, causing enviromental issues that way.
If you really want to increase mileage and lower emissions --- drop the speed limits to 45 mph on the interstates!!! right now, outside of the major metropolitan areas in our state you can go 70mph ....
I still think we should just adopt SOME of the rationing standards of the 1940's ... oh wait .... this plan just might do that for me.
