Mosquito Coast

Now I've heard it all!

They are blaming the mosquito population on the economy!

Here's the line of thinking ...

Because more homes have been forclosed on and left vacant ... there are more pools & ponds being left unattended. More standing/stagnent water the more eggs laid. moe eggs means more mosquitos.

I believe that they are looking at it the wrong way -- its not that there's more mosquitos being hatched as much as it is that they are just being more widely laid. Instead of the eggs being concentrated in wooded or swampy areas, they are getting a foothold in suburban/urban areas.

While there is a certain amount of this going on already ... I will give you that there are now more places for mosquitos to lay their eggs -- but does that mean that if one mosquito lays eggs in an area that no other will lay there? I don't think so - I would think it would be like fish.

eventually yes, I suppose it can be shown that there will be a rise in populations of MN Hummingbirds .... and controlling WHERE they breed - in places easier to regulate and drop birth-control.

but to blame the economy -- I think that's going a bit far.

Wait for it --- Bush will be blamed soon in the media for it.
