Okay they have been showing the eating utensil in question all over the media this morning -- it is a metal utensil that is shaped very much like a Swiss Army knife (apologizes to the reporter that said it yesterday and I didn't think he knew what he was talking about -- you were correct) for kindergarteners.
BUT the knife in question is in fact a pocket knife blade that must be at least 2 1/2 - 3 inches long, thin and sharp -- yes by all definitions it is a weapon.
BUT lets not forget that this is a 6 yr old .... also by the sounds of it he handed it over to a teacher or other school official without incident or fuss ... he didn't open the blade at all nor did he try to hide it when handing it over.
I couldn't understand why the district would be treating this child like a high schooler until I heard this quote from the mother this morning:
" ...straight A kid, Honor roll, never been in trouble, you know, never done anything wrong. " Okay a couple of things here
1) since when do you have grading systems in First Grade?
2) what district has an Honor Roll for grade schoolers??
This whole system is screwed up! The school system in Delaware must be set up to treat all kids like little adults -- now I know its been a while since my college days, but I can't believe that Child Psychology has changed so much ... this is a BAD thing to take that 'childhood' time away from kids.
Yeah as adults we'd like to know that our kids are able to handle things - but there are just some basic developmental steps that need to take place before we start putting such pressures as 'Honor Roll's on their poor little psychies ....
And I don't care how 'mature' a child seems, they need to go thru those stages or else we are going to have an army of Sheldon's on our hands (if you don't know "Sheldon" is a character on the show The Big Bang Theory who has no social skills & has issues with interpersonal relationships, he is anal-retentive and borderline functional-autistic in my opinion).
So to top it off, the mother/father/cub scout were being interviewed on the "Early Show" this morning and it was stated that the mother will be home-schooling her child instead of sending him to the county reform school (can't blame her I wouldn't want my 6 yr old hanging out with those kids either) ... the reporter asked the boy if he liked being home-schooled and the boy answered that it allowed him to be 'in his serious mode' if he wanted to....
What kid uses the word 'mode'??? And he used it in proper context! He was either very coached or this poor kid has already lost his short childhood!
Looking at the school system, and the mother (father didn't talk so I can't speak to him) -- this kid doesn't stand a chance.
and for those of you who force your kids to grow up so quick --- SHAME ON YOU.
