I saw tthis story on Good Morning America, this morning ... or maybe yesterday, I don't remember now .. but I'm going to predict a calamity is coming!
So -- Virgin Airlines ... which I guess started by some Australian guy who owns Virgin Records as well .... I've seen him once on a talk show as a kid, but I couldn't tell you which show it was - that's how UNimpressed I was with his guy.
Anyways - Virgin Airlines decided to replace thier AIRPLANE FUEL with BIOFUEL (aka French Fry Oil, generally its been used an incredible amount of imes).
They said they didn't make any any changes to the engines .... did nothing special to the biofuel ... just poured it in a flew.
This flight route goes between NYC and London ... with a huge ocean inbetween.
Okay -- I have to tell you ... when I started college, I went in for Aerospace ... yes, I wanted to be a rocket scientist *if it wasn't for he fact that the majoriy end up designing cars instead of working for NASA, I'd have stuck wihth it) ... you CANNOT simply replace jet fuel with biofuel.
It would be like trying to run your coar on WATER ... we know it can be done, hey've had steam powered cars before -- but we are talking a whole different type of engine!
here are Diesil vehicles which have been converted to use Bio-diesil ... but there are differences in the fuels.
Bio-fuels tend to get very GUMMY as they get to he higher temps needed to run an engine ... E85 is technically a biofuel, even though it uses ethinol produced by corn ... and if you've ever overhauled a motor after its been on E85 you've seen this goopy stuff.
It tends to EAT metal and gaskets - especially gaskets - which in a fuel system can cause all sorts of issues.
My biggest concern is actually the distance between stops. Between Britian and NY is NO PLACE to land. While there are places such as Greenland and Iceland, they are actually quite a ways off the flight plan.
I'm thinking either Virgin Airlines were the luckiest buggers on the face of the Earth ... or they actually did something to the engines/fuel and simply are not going to tell.
I just hope it will not take a tragedy before someone looks into this ...
