In America, every November we celebrate Thanksgiving ... a time for gathering familes ... a time to catch-up ... a time for food ....
When my great-grandparents came over from Europe, Thanksgiving was a new concept forthem ... but one they embraced ...
They came here not knowing what to expect ... Some already had relatives here, my mother's side I don't think so ...
They had to deal with a lot of prejudices ... I remember my mother saying that during World War 2, her mother said NOT to tell anyone where her grandparents came from ... Remember, Poland was occupied by Germany at the time ...
My father, who grew up in Northeast Minneapolis, didn't have to worry too much about it - most of the area was of Polish decent.
How different their lives were from each other ... same city, different sides of town though
So - this holiday season .... if they are still around ...
DON'T HIDE from your family ...
TALK TO THEM ....
LEARN about them, and where they came from ...
Even if they are your SIBLINGS .... their life has been different than yours ....
