OMG - this is when I am very glad my husband doesn't fly any longer ... he used to have to travel a lot for his work, and he did go to D.C. a couple times ....
I feel so bad for all the families involved ...
Apparently this happened last night .... Flight 5342 from Kansas to DC was in it's normal flight path .... the Black Hawk heliocopter was in it's normal flight path ...
aka Standard Pattern ....
So what happened???
They have released (on CNN, see - I do watch other news channels) the AUDIO from the Black Hawk to the Control Tower when they SAW the airliner ... it is during this recording when you can hear someone shout "Oh My God"
I don't know if it was a Traffic Controller or someone on the Black Hawk ....
They are saying NO SURVIVORS at this time --- wow -- I cannot comprehend that everyone on the airliner were killed ...
The airliner has been flying into DC for the last year or so ... but no longer than that ...
You would have thought there would have been a LOT of Collision Warnings going off in either the plane or the heliocopter!!!
But there is NO alarms heard in the audio that has been released.
I've heard quite a bit of speculation about the airliner, since it was approaching for a landing, was likely some 400-500 ft. off the ground ....
I've heard speculatiuon that the heliocopter was told to get in behind another craft (supposably another BH) and they mistook the airliner for the other craftt, misjudged the size of the airliner and crashed into the side of it.
But the speculation is coming from ANCHOR PEOPLE not anyone on either side of the aquation (US Army/Airlines) ....
I only know .... they fear 60+ lives lost ... THIS INCLUDES 4 Army personnel on the 'copter, as well as passengers on the flight - it seems there were several people from the US Olymipic Ice Skating team on board, as well as 2 RussianB skaters as well (a husband and wife) ...
The BH (UA50) was on an ANNUAL ASSESSMENT and were said to be using night vision goggles ... rather unusual, if you ask me, since I would think the lights in the area would be just too much ... but the Army likely knows what they doing.
So I have just heard that they will be looking at who knew what when .... what "data" was available to the helicopter, the airliner, and ATC (Air Traffic Control) ...
If you want just a little bit of an idea of what ATC goes through -- check out FlightAware ....
Zoom in on nearly ANY airport ....
You can see how many flights they have to deal with - only thing is ... they don't see little aircraft figures, they see blips ... I have no idea how they distinguish things apart ....
Holy Crap ...
Let's hope they find SOMEONE still alive ... but it's been over 5 hours .... and it's been COLD in the area ....
Pray everybody ... Pray.
