So the OMB (White House Office of Management & Budget) and the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) have actually agreed on at least three money pits that should be nixed == yeah I know, they can't seem to agree on anything. But don't get excited, maybe this is what the President meant by 'deficit neutral', I doubt we will be getting any of the money back in our pockets.
So what are the programs?
- Denali Commision -- meant to build the infrastructure in Alaska, the Mississippi Delta, and the Appalatians ... only thing is there are 29 other programs out there that can do the same thing for less money. The program was inacted about 10 yrs ago (Clinton years) ... but cutting it will save the budget $100M/yr.
- Nuclear 2010 -- the program was inacted 7 yrs ago (Bush years) to help design the nuclear power plant of the future. $500 billion has already gone into it and $600 Million will be saved when it gets cut. So why cut this one? The CBO felt that it was wrong to use public funding for a program that subsidizes activities that would be prohibitive for any private business. (hmmm, by that token then we shouldn't be using private funds for peace officers/homeland security or school systems)
- M.A.P (Market Access Program) -- this promotes American made products in other countries - souonds great, right? But the funds have been going for such products as Dole, M&Ms, Gallo Wine, etc) ... this one I have a bit of an issue with -- just because they are big names here, doesn't mean they are big names over seas. Granted 'product placement' in movies would probably just as effective, I just hate to see a good program go away because someone exploited the loop hole that allows big business to use it = for smaller businesses it would be great. Its a $200M/yr project, they want to take out $40M/yr from it.
Well - between this and cutting the fundng to ACORN (different post) we might be able to save a couple of bucks.
